Huawei surpassed Samsung in making foldable smartphones
Huawei has overtaken Samsung to become the world's leading foldable smartphone brand in the first quarter of this year in the production of foldable smartphones. Despite ongoing US sanctions, Huawei has topped this fast-growing segment for the first time. This information has emerged in a report published by market research institute Counterpoint Research recently. News Gizmochyana and The Banik Barta.
According to the report, Huawei's foldable smartphone sales increased by 257 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2024. In contrast, South Korean tech giant Samsung's market share fell from 58 percent in the first quarter of 2023 to 23 percent in the first quarter of 2024.
The report also revealed that 5G foldable models have been the main driving force behind Huawei's success. Compared to the same period last year, Huawei sold 84 percent more foldable smartphones in the first quarter of this year, most of which were 5G models. At that time, the company's popular foldable smartphone models included Mate X Five and Pocket Two.
On the other hand, the slow pace of unveiling new devices could be the cause of slowdown in Samsung's foldable market, technology analysts believe. The company is also said to be gearing up to bring the Galaxy Z Fold Six and Flip Six to the market.
Unlike Huawei in the Chinese market, Honor and Motorola achieved positive growth in foldable smartphone sales in other countries. Honor's market share in the global foldable smartphone market increased from 3 percent last year to 12 percent in the first quarter of this year, making it the third largest company in the foldable segment.
